My name is Tamera Martens and I want to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail in 2012. But this isn't going to be any old hike. This hike will also raise money for Flagstaff Shelter Services, a homeless shelter located in Flagstaff, AZ.My goal is to raise $25,000.00 for Flagstaff Shelter Services.
During my twenties, I spent much of my time homeless, living in transient motels or couch-surfing with friends. Although I worked, I lacked the resources to manage a place of my own, so I floated. In my middle-twenties I finally went back to college and began working in the behavioral health field, assisting teenagers and adults with behavioral and mental health issues. But I continued to dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Now I'm 50, and I'm ready to go.
This hike will fulfill a dream of mine, while also raising money for Flagstaff Shelter Services. Flagstaff, Arizona has a sizable homeless population. The combination of mild temperatures, beautiful scenery and remote forest areas make it a haven for many homeless individuals.
Many of the homeless served today are the working poor, just like I was in my twenties. Flagstaff Shelter is the only shelter in town that serves individuals regardless of their religious affiliation, substance abuse history, and behavioral health needs. Without Flagstaff Shelter Services, homeless individuals spend the winter exposed to the elements, with several individuals freezing to death each year. Please consider supporting this project.
