Make an Impact - Volunteer with FSS

At FSS, volunteers are an essential part of our daily operations.  FSS operates a year-round Day Center which serves as a place of any homeless adult to go to access basic human needs: showers, food/snacks, telephone, mail, computer, and laundry facilities.  And, during the winter months, FSS operates a Winter Emergency Shelter. 

 Here are some of the duties that FSS volunteers have:

• Greeting/Checking in FSS members: When people arrive at the Day Center (or Overnight Shelter) volunteers greet them with a friendly smile and find out what FSS can do for them. 
• General Supervision and Interaction: Volunteers walk through the facility and outside periodically to make sure that FSS members are following Day Center rules and are abiding by our Good Neighbor Agreement.  Beyond monitoring, volunteers also interact with our members by playing board or card games or simply talking.
• Answering Phones: Volunteers answer the office phone when staff members are busy.
• Maintaining and Organizing Donations: FSS relies heavily on "in-kind" donations (items such as books, clothes, hygiene supplies, and coffee).  Volunteers may help with all aspects of donation management from soliciting goods to sorting.
• Office Assistance:  Volunteers who have past work history that includes filing, typing and computer skills and who are available on a regular basis are welcome!
• Special Projects: During our down time, FSS arranges special projects such as clothing and donation drives, community yard sales, and other ventures.  FSS relies heavily on volunteers to aid us with these special projects as they arise.
